How to Make a Croque Monsieur?
When you want to make Croque Monsieur at home, start by heating a pan or griddle over medium heat. Cut two slices of stale sourdough bread.
Generously spread butter on the outer surface of the bread slices and place them on top of each other, with the buttered edges facing each other.
You can use mustard to add a nice flavor to the top slice of bread. Place ham and any hard cheese of your choice on the bottom bread slice. (You can capture the original flavor in the recipe with Emmental Cheese)
Fry the sandwich with the top and bottom slices together until it gets a nice golden color. Before removing it from the pan, sprinkle some melting cheese on the top slice, close the lid of the pan and wait for the cheese on the top slice to gain a wonderfully fluid consistency. If you wish, you can also use the oven at this stage and let the wonderful cheese dance with fire until it turns golden brown.
When the cheese is completely melted and your hot sandwich turns golden, it is ready to serve! Enjoy your own homemade Croque Monsieur!
